What the prefix controls
A CIDR prefix such as /24 says how many of the 32 IPv4 bits describe the network. The remaining bits identify addresses inside that network. A larger prefix leaves fewer host bits, so the subnet is smaller.
The subnet mask is the same boundary written in dotted decimal. The network address is the first address in the range, and the broadcast address is the last in traditional multi-host IPv4 subnets.
